Demystifying Writers' Contracts
Fresh Ink: Hull Playwriting Festival 2024

Workshop: Demystifying Writers’ Contracts

With the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain

Join us in the pop-up space on Pier Street for a workshop with Writers’ Guild of Great Britain (WGGB).

Understanding what you’ve been asked to agree to in a contract is a vital aspect of any writer’s career. But how do you know what makes a good contract – or a bad one? And how can you be sure you are protecting yourself, your work and your rights?

WGGB assistant organisers and caseworkers, Joe Abel and Eleanor Dawson, will deliver a 90-minute interactive workshop to demystify the contractual process in theatre, TV and film writing, covering:

  • What types of contract you are likely to be offered
  • Legal terminology and how to cut through the jargon
  • How to avoid common mistakes
  • What makes an industry-standard agreement
  • WGGB collective agreements and how they work

Joe Abel and Eleanor Dawson work to support the national, regional and craft committees on industrial issues affecting writers in the UK.
