Fresh Ink: Hull Playwriting Festival 2024

Fresh Ink takes place at two separate venues, a three-minute walk apart, in Hull’s Fruit Market.

Stage@TheDock is an open-air amphitheatre in the former central dry dock, next to the river that gives the city its name and opposite the iconic Deep aquarium. A weatherproof marquee will be erected for the festival for Stage@TheDock to play host to all of our play readings.

The Pop-Up Space at 1-2 Pier Street is a former warehouse converted by Wykeland. Pier Street will host all of our workshops and the majority of our talks.

Fruit Market

Map of the Fruit Market

The Fruit Market quarter of Hull is home to dozens of independent bars, restaurants, cafes and shops, nestled between the rivers Hull and Humber and the marina.

Home to a thriving market by the water since the 16th century, it was in the 19th century that Hull’s fruit trade really took off.

Many of the market’s early buildings were destroyed in the second world war, with new warehouses, many of which still stand, built in the 1940s and 1950s.

Fruit merchants continued to trade from Humber Street as late as 2009, before moving elsewhere and giving way to independent artists and traders.

Much of the area is now owned by Wykeland, who have developed it over the past decade and who approached Middle Child in 2023 with the idea of using Stage@TheDock to support Hull artists, which led to the inspiration for Fresh Ink.
